Market Expansion

Adapting products to succeed in new markets and segments

Which successful aspects of the product today will still succeed in a different market or sector?

Are we solving the same problem for the new customers, or only assuming it?

Will the product be bought, used and evaluated in the same way in the new context?

Can the current channel and service model work, or are there different expectations?

Does the product, pricing, channel, service or positioning need to adapt without losing focus?

After looking at all of this, is this still an expansion worth pursuing?

My approach

The starting point is understanding why the product works in its existing market. I separate the strength of the product itself from the conditions around it: established channels, customer habits, brand recognition, service coverage or a particularly favourable competitive position.

I then reconstruct how the category works in the target market: who buys, who influences the decision, how alternatives are compared, what customers expect to pay, which channels they trust and what must be available locally.

From there, I distinguish what should remain intact from what may need to change: the product, configuration, proposition, pricing, channel, service or operating model.

The result is an entry recommendation: which customer and offer to begin with, which assumptions must be tested locally, what the company must have in place, and which signals would justify further investment.

A typical decision

A specialist European manufacturer had built a strong position with a professional B2B product in its home market.

The neighbouring country looked attractive for familiar reasons: enough potential customers, limited direct competition and several distributors interested in representing the range.

On paper, expansion appeared to be mainly a question of finding the right partner. A closer look suggested otherwise.

Customers in the new market bought the category differently. Rental played a larger role and service was expected locally.

Even the price changed meaning: what looked premium at home was now almost asking customers to choose an unfamiliar brand over the market leader for much the same money.

There was nothing obviously wrong with the product.

Nor was there anything obviously wrong with the market.

The question was whether the same product proposition could travel with them.

Market Expansion helps determine what should remain unchanged, what has to travel differently, and whether entering the market is worth doing at all.

Every product reaches its next decision differently

Sometimes the question is about expansion.

Sometimes the conversation begins somewhere else.
